For nearly a century, the textile industry was a primary driver in the South's economy, and the villages that emerged around textile manufacturing became home to generations of Carolinians.
Common Ground explores the landscapes shaped by the textile industry and the people who continue to live in towns once dominated by textile mills: rivers and dams, mill interiors, downtowns, portraits, and home interiors.
In the 1990s, new industries moved in to occupy the spaces left behind by the once booming mills, creating a need for new home construction and infrastructure in and around these former textile centers. These photographs were all made with a view camera on 4x5 color negative film.
